Examining the unplayed games

by Eric on April 27th, 2005

Okay, so lets take another look at the list of unplayed games. (ignoring expansions this time.) I’m going to list the games I’m “likely” to play vs. unlikely.

Likely:

Unlikely: (and comments as to why it’s unlikely)

  • Airlines: United States Set 2 – picked this up in a “hurricane relief” sale Avalanche had a while back for $5. Probably spent too much as by all reports, it’s dreadful. There should be a game in there somewhere – will have to look around for variants.
  • Bitin’ Off Hedz – Cheapass Games product. Would have to find it first, but it’s unlikely to garner any interest.
  • Diskwars Deadlands – Doomtown Rangewars – picked up a bunch of these at 75% off as Wizards of the Coast was having their liquidation sale before closing the retail chain. I love Deadlands (my alltime favorite RPG) but I don’t see taking the time to learn this, particularly as it’s designed as a CCG, and the cards just aren’t available any more – it’s likely to be only marginally playable with what I have.
  • Falling – Another Cheapass product. Turns out this is a real-time cardgame. Ick.
  • Funkenschlag – I own and love Power Grid – I just can’t see going back to play the crayon-based original. There are some random map variants out there to make it appealing, but with the France/Italy PG expansion map coming out this year, I think all my gaming in this system will be restricted to Power Grid.
  • Give Me the Brain! – Cheapass again. The theme is the most interesting, but just doesn’t have any appeal anymore.
  • Lords of the Renaissance – this game actually looks very interesting. Production value is low (it’s a borderline DTP effort), but there aren’t very many games of this scope that can handle up to 12 players. Looks like it could be a great multi-player game, but LONG. Would have to be at Salishan or Sunriver, and definitely scheduled in advance.
  • Pirateer – a rather uninteresting abstract. This was originally bought as a birthday present for someone who basically disappeared from his circle of friends a few weeks before his birthday, and I haven’t seen or heard from him since.
  • Res Publica – this has the highest likelihood of being played of anything in this sublist. Bought as part of the same Avalanche Press sale mentioned for Airlines.
